A Review of "In the Greenwood"

Paddy Tutty is a traditional singer and multi instrumentalist based in Saskatoon, Canada.  Her fourth solo album "In the Greenwood" takes its trawl from traditional repertoire of Ireland, Scotland, France and contemporary material written in a narrative ballad form.  Brian Pearson's "The Four Seasons" is a compelling opener framing her rich vocals with lush dulcimer, fiddle, bass and log drum backing.  Tutty is an able instrumentalist featuring on guitar, dulcimer, fiddle, concertina and harpsichord.  Her rich supple singing is particularly suited to Scottish ballads like "The Gypsy Laddie" and the closing "The Cuckoo" where her singing recalls Anne Briggs' seminal recording.  Paddy's instrumental flair shines on "Sui Sios Fa Mo Dhidean" on harpsichord and "We Be Soldiers Three" has a Renaissance Fair atmosphere.  "In the Greenwood" is a quietly beguiling affair whose treasures reveal themselves on further exposure.
